“We’re temporarily underfunded,” I answered.

“That means poor.”

“It means we still have dinner. And as long as we have dinner, we’re doing all right.”

Rose watched me closely.

“You’re tired.”

“I’m old, sweetheart. I’m allowed to be tired.”

They laughed, and I held on to that sound as tightly as I held on to every dollar.
